Happiness.

Democritus said: “Happiness resides not in possession and not in gold; the feeling of happiness dwells in the soul.” But how do we find happiness and integrate it into our souls?

A young puppy asked his mother the same question. The bitch (lol, couldn't resist) told him that happiness is at the end of his tail. The puppy spent his entire afternoon chasing after his tail, hoping to catch happiness. After many long hours, he finally gave up; and that was when his mother came by again. “Dear son, happiness has always been following closely behind you, and you have failed to appreciate.”

One major step towards happiness is avoiding anger. Anger transforms people into bitter and vengeful spirits. Over the course of National Service/being in the Army has made me grasp two critical aspects to conquering anger.

The first thing to remember is that people have different goals. Some aspire to become self-made millionaires. Others just want to hold a stable job in midst of an economic recession. If you were to force someone who is content with making a living into a business class to learn more about investments, he would be unhappy. Yet there is nothing wrong with wanting something more for that person, isn’t it? The intent is good, but is it welcomed?

The second subject of concern is that even when people have the same objective, they tend to harbour different expectations. Have you ever wondered why your primary school friend can still get rewarded with a trip to McDonald’s for passing his exam while your mother gave you a fierce reprimanding for missing out on one question and hence not getting full marks?

As said by William James, the art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook.
